Day 28: Desolate

des·o·late:
Adjective. (of a place) Deserted of people and in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness.

When I first started editing this photo, there was something about it I didn't like. I decided to try something completely different from what I usually do, and created a photo with a darker mood. I ended up really liking the final result, and I am brainstorming some ideas about creating a series of images with the same sort of feel that this image has.

Day 27: Sunset

I spent about an hour and a half outside this evening with my cameras watching the sun go down. The hour before sunset, and the actual sunset is my favorite time to be outside photographing, because the light is absolutely beautiful and I don't have to be awake super early to get the perfect light!

Day 12: Double Me

This is my self portrait for the week. I was going for a surreal feel by having two of me in one picture. I accomplished this by holding a printed photo of myself. The only thing I don't like about this photo is the reflection from the flash in the printed photo, but there was no way to fix that.

Day 11: Blizzard

The first blizzard of the year happened to fall during my first cold of the year. Despite the blowing winds, freezing temperatures, and my annoying cough, I bundled up super warm and headed outside to capture the winter storm in photographs.

Day 8: Blowing Snow

It was crazy windy today, so I took my camera outside to see if I could capture the wind blowing the snow around. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. In a lot of my shots it wasn't easy to see the difference between the snow that was blowing through the wind and the snow that was on the ground.

Day 7: Great Expanse

I often take photos of this group of trees. Out of all the photos I  have created of these trees, this is the first one that I like. I think it probably has something to do with the amount of negative space that I included in the composition. I am a huge fan of negative space. I think it says a lot about the subject and can tell a great story when it is used correctly.

Only 1 week left to order "366 Days, 366 Photos" for $70. Get it now before the price goes up! http://www.kirstynrathertphotography.ca/p1044534520/h50e2ff32#h50e2ff32

Day 5: Beautiful Bokeh

This is one of many photos I took this morning while there was still frost on all the trees and weeds. I love everything about this image, especially the bokeh (the out of focus circles of light in the background).

Day 3: Silhouette

My dog woke me up at 8 this morning so I could let her outside, and when I looked out the window I saw the most gorgeous sunrise ever. So once Phoebe was back inside and in bed again I went outside with my camera to capture the morning light. This photo doesn't show how beautiful the sunrise is, but I thought it was still very interesting and deserved to be shared.

Day 2: Impressionism

With this photo I decided to create an impressionist look. Because of the composition and softness of the photo, it almost like an abstract painting, which is exactly the look I was going for.

Day 1: A New Year, A New Start

Here we go again! First thing is first, happy new year!

I have decided to once again do the 365 day challenge. There will be some small differences this year from last though. The first and biggest one is that every single photo I post will be a photo that I am proud of. The second change I am making is that I don't have to take a photo everyday. I can share a photo from a previous day if I run out of time or if I don't like any of the photos from the day. The only rule I am putting into place with this is that the photo I share has to be taken within the previous week of the day I don't have a photo for. This will make things a thousand times easier for me, but you will still get to see new content everyday and they will be good pictures all the time, rather than just a lazy snapshot 20 minutes before I go to bed.

A few more minor things. This year I will try to write more along with my photos rather than just throwing a picture up. I can't promise this everyday, but I will definitely be writing a lot more often than I did in 2012. This way you can get to know the person behind the camera a bit better and you can also learn why I created a certain photo the way I did. I will also likely be posting more business related stuff up here, like contest information, deals and promotions, etc. but I will try to devise a plan that will keep those posts separate from my 365 posts.

I think that's all I have to share for now, so onto todays photo. This is a photo of what used to be my favourite tree in the entire world. It was old and dead and had some seriously awesome branches that I loved taking pictures of! About 6 months ago it got cut down and all I was left with was this stump that's sorta cool, but not nearly as cool as the tree was.
